Who Were Las Mariposas?

Patria, Minerva, and Maria Teresa Mirabal — known as Las Mariposas (“The Butterflies”) — were Dominican activists who stood up against the brutal dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. Their resistance, intelligence, and unwavering bravery made them symbols of hope and defiance. On November 25,1960, they were assassinated for their activism — a tragedy that galvanized the nation and the world. 

Today, November 25th is recognized globally as the international Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women — a legacy born from their sacrifice.
